The BIG Ashfield Spring Clean Flying Skips have proved to be a smash hit with residents.  125 tonnes of waste – equivalent to a Boeing 757 was collected when the Flying Skips – bin lorries on tour – visited 64 locations across the District as part of this year’s BIG Ashfield Spring Clean.

Now in its fifth year, the BIG Ashfield Spring clean provides residents with the chance to dispose of extra waste via kerb side collections, Flying Skips and our new look free bulky waste collection service.

As part of the Council’s commitment to make Ashfield a cleaner and greener place to live, work and visit Cllr Samantha Deakin, Cabinet Member for Parks, Town Centres and Neighbourhood Services said “It’s fantastic to see residents taking advantage of the Flying Skips. So many of you took the chance to get rid of your extra waste. This is part of our war on waste and our Council staff were brilliant.”

Council Leader Jason Zadrozny said, “Ashfield’s BIG Spring Clean has been copied the length and breadth of the country. Councillors mucked in and residents were delighted to get rid of their extra waste. The flying skips, alongside the free bulky waste collections, the extra kerbside collections and litter picks will go a huge way to restoring pride in our communities. This is just one reason why we saw a 20% reduction in fly tipping last year in Ashfield.”

44 tonnes of waste were collected in Kirkby and the Rural areas, 38 tonnes in Hucknall and 43 tonnes in Sutton.

Cllr Deakin continued “125 tonnes is around the weight of a Boeing 757, carrying up to 295 passengers. It’s a colossal amount.

“This has been our most successful Spring Clean and it’s great that residents helped us make Ashfield cleaner and greener.”
