With statistics showing that 1 in 4 people will suffer from a mental health related illness throughout their lifetime addressing mental health is just as important as physical health in the workplace.
Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is an internationally recognised training course designed to teach people how to spot and crucially recognise the symptoms of mental ill health and guide the affected individuals and family members to the appropriate support.
The outcome of the Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) course attendance aims to increase us to talk more freely about and reduce the stigma surrounding mental health problems and to boost confidence to promote early intervention to deal with the issues to expedite recovery .
Internal support for a company’s mental health first aiders is imperative, with HR support, a clear remit on network discussions, a clear policy document, company literature and a robust referral assistance pathway.
Following the introduction of a company mental health first aider and clear mental health policy, a company should expect to see the positive results through the monitoring of access to services and outcomes, reduced absenteeism and positive staff surveys following training/information sessions.
