Ashfield District Council’s metal recycling scheme has raised £10k for John Eastwood Hospice.
The money is raised through a metal recycling scheme Mansfield Crematorium has joined through the Institute of Crematorium and Cemetery Management.
Metal recovered at the end of the cremation process, including screws and handles from the coffin, is recycled by a specialist company. Any surplus money generated from this process is then shared between scheme members who must donate anything they receive to bereavement related charities.
Authorisation from the applicant of the funeral is sought for this process to take place at the start of the arrangement of the funeral.
Craig Bonar, Director of Resources and Business Transformation at Ashfield District Council said: “We are pleased to have donated £10k to John Eastwood Hospice as part of the metal recycling scheme. The hospice provides a fantastic service within the District and we know there are many families that have benefitted from their help and support. We hope this money goes some way to them continuing to support the local community.”
Sharon Williams, CEO at John Eastwood Hospice said “It was great to hear that the hospice has been chosen as beneficiary of this fantastic donation, as we rely on fundraising and donations to enable us to support specialist palliative care services.  The donation will go towards funding our ambition to fully refurbish the In-Care 12 bed unit, in what will be our 30th year of supporting local people in the hospice and out in the community.”
